Sunny Days, Heat Waves and the Journey to Simplicity – Take Two

Well it is 9:03 pm and still 25 degrees Celsius on the back deck!!!!  The heatwave continues.

So how do you keep cool in these soaring temperatures that we are unaccustomed to?   On Thursday John and I decided to go for a motorcycle day trip.  What better way to keep cool than with natural air conditioning (going 100 kms an hour on the highway)?

The giant metal hummingbird and flower were awesome, necessitating a stop for some pictures.

All in all it was a good day on the motorcycle.  A lot warmer than we expected, even travelling at high speed.  We took a meandering route with no real plans and a very loose destination.  Found out that the beach we used to frequent is gone (or at least access to it) and that there is a gas station in River John (thank heavens!).  Ice cream is golden when the heat is soaring and a break to drink water and have peanut butter and jam sandwiches is heavenly after about 5 hours of biking.  It really is about the little things 🙂

The sweet smell of clover and wild roses in the heat – the colour of the sky – the power of the wind when it buffets – the sense of freedom and abandon as you sit back on the bike and allow another to be in control.  Not thinking, even once, of the dishes in the sink and the cat hair that is taking over the house.  Priceless!

Backing up a day to Thursday, we spent a lovely day with awesome friends (who like us enough to put up with us for a whole day!).  We got a drive in Ellison’s LOVELY new car (with air conditioning).
We started with a trip to the driving range to hit golf balls…..

Lesson for the day!  SHOOT STRAIGHT!

A trip to Frenchy’s.  Lunch at Tim’s.  A random drive through the beautiful valley.  Then the icing on the cake- a walk on the flats at Blomidon!

Took some time to examine the wildlife:
Pretty Shell!

Oops, someone is still home!

Hello Mr. Snail – we will call you George 🙂

An hour and a half on the beach – we got some exercise, a nice wind  burn which helped quell the heat of the day, a lot of laughs, some good conversation and a healthy dose of nature!
Followed by a lovely supper and dessert on the way home!  What more could we have asked for?
Once again, when we take time to stop and look at the simple, affordable, unassuming things around us – when we leave home and connect with others and search out an adventure – when we look and see and allow ourselves to feel and laugh…….then we will truly follow the advice of the Psalmist

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
 Psalm 34:8
